Why Troop 2000?

Our troop had its first meetings in January, 2000. While we don't generally use the overused "millennium" in describing our troop, we do feel we're embarking on a new tradition of scouting in our area. The ideals are the same; the century is different.

Where do we meet?

Our troop meetings are generally every Wednesday at 7p at Ranch View Baptist Church, 416 Rancho Santa Fe Road, between Encinitas Blvd. and Olivenhain Road. Usually, on the first meeting of each month, we start at 6p and spend that additional hour working on advancement activities. Check our online calendar for more information.

Do we camp often?

You bet! We try to do one major outing each month. We've been canoeing down the Colorado, rock climbing at Joshua Tree, gem hunting near Blythe, and cave exploring in the Anza-Borrego Desert. You can see photos from many of our trips in our Scrapbook.

What about programs for older, more experienced scouts?

We're pleased that we do have older scouts in our troop, despite our young history. In fact, we have several Eagle, several Life and quite a few Star scouts in our Senior Patrol. For boys age 14 and older, we have more challenging trek opportunities as well as a Venturing program.

Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age. Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.

Can adults get involved?

Absolutely. We believe a scout is most successful when he has the full support and participation of his parent in all his activities. And scouting is no exception. While the leadership for programs and outings is provided by trained volunteers, many parents assist the troop by participating in the Troop committee, helping with special programs, and even attending some functions as added help or expert guides. Don't hesitate to contact our Committee Chairperson to find out how you can get involved.

As an adult, do I have to have been a scout to volunteer?

No. Many of our parents have little or no scouting experience. The Boy Scouts of America provides a great variety of exquisite training programs to give adults the skills, insights and fundamentals necessary to be an effective adult leader or participant. Learning with your son might be one of the greatest experiences you can have as a team. For those families without a strong paternal presence, mothers often times go through the adult training and assist in many of the troop's activities. For those families, scouting provides a good source of male influence, support and camaraderie sometimes needed in a young boy's mental, spiritual and physical growth.

Where can I find out more about scouting?

Go to our Resources section. We have links there to many good online destinations. Or contact our Scoutmaster or Committee Chairperson for more information on Troop 2000.

We hope to hear from you soon!
